Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: A Month-by-Month Guide
Understanding Sri Lanka's Climate
Sri Lanka experiences two monsoon seasons, making it a year-round destination. Understanding the weather patterns helps you choose the perfect time for your visit.
The Two Monsoons
Yala (Southwest) Monsoon: May to September - affects the west and south coasts
Maha (Northeast) Monsoon: October to January - affects the north and east coasts
Month-by-Month Breakdown
December - February (Peak Season)
Perfect weather on the west and south coasts. Ideal for beach holidays, surfing in Mirissa and Hikkaduwa, and visiting cultural triangle sites. Expect higher prices and more tourists.
Festivals: Christmas, New Year celebrations
March - April (Hot Season)
Hot and dry across most of the island. Great for wildlife safaris as animals gather around water sources. Beach weather is still excellent on the west coast.
Festivals: Sinhala and Tamil New Year (April)
May - July (Green Season)
Southwest monsoon brings rain to west and south coasts. Perfect time for the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee). Cultural sites are less crowded with occasional showers.
Festivals: Vesak (May) - beautiful lanterns and decorations
August - September
Continued rain in the southwest, excellent weather in the east. Great for surfing in Arugam Bay and exploring the ancient cities.
Festivals: Kandy Esala Perahera (July/August) - spectacular cultural pageant
October - November (Inter-monsoon)
Transitional period with unpredictable weather. Both monsoons may be active. Good deals on accommodation. Consider the hill country during this time.
Festivals: Deepavali (October/November)
